Mistletoe Madness @ Laundry Bar The Curve

First band to open the show was Bonyari Band from Japan which consists of dreadlocks street performers, didgeridoo and djembe players and precussionist. They performed tribal instrumentals and they also covered John Lennon's "Imagine".

Second up was The Rebel Scum. Despite the absence of Micwrecka, The Rebel Scum still wrecks with Emcees WordsManifest, HQA, and Illson at the helms as DJ Cliq scratches on. They opened their set with WMD, followed by a Lady Dee assisted "Sister sister" TRS also did a DeeBee track with Figure Of Speech repping for The Works performing "Jump Up To The Mic" and closed it with their lead single from their upcoming album The Time Has Scum "BakDatang" which featured NBE and Spit from Naughtius Maximus.

As Republic Of Brickfields getting ready for their set, a number of dreadlocks Rastafarians gathered front and center prepped for a rocksteady raggae tunes by the stadium status vet. The frontman Aru was energetic as ever, he stole the show covered some yesteryears raggae classics from Bob Marley to UB40 to Inner Circle Laundry witnessed more dreads gathering than a Jah cleansing ceremony skanking away to The Republic's lead single Ganjaran. Peace Love Unity indeed.

Last to close down the night was the headliner Shamik the human beatboxer straight from Canada. This guy is sick, he got the tight bass and snares complete with scratches done only by his vocal chords. The man even did a rendition of Timbaland's "The way I are", with the assistance of DJ Nesh crossfading scratches within juggling beats with Shamik's outstanding beatboxing and MC Vandal did an impromptu freestyle as he always do.

Yo! with acts as diverse as tonight Fortnight is definitely the music festival you definitely don't want to miss out.

Have A Happy M.U.N.D.A.E. @ No Black Tie

This is the very first installment of Have A Happy M.U.N.D.A.E.. And from the looks of tonight it will be pretty difficult for the next installment to top this ones. With the line up consists of up and coming and also established singers and songwriters in KL, namely Shelley Leong, Paolo Delfino, Warren Chan, Reza Salleh, Najwa and Broken Scar the cover charge of RM10 is really a bargain compared to the top quality music that was in tonights performers setlists.

Six acts played a 2 round robin sets, Shelley Leong, Paolo Delfino, and Warren Chan goes on the first round Shelley Leong performed her folk sets, Paolo Delfino performed everything but his single "Little Things" which I looked forward to Warren Chan from the group Ferns, in my opinion performed the shortest sets among the three Christmas spirited and new songs from these singer songwriters are abound tonight. Personally my hats off to Shelley and Paolo for their remarkable stage presence.

The final round started and it is up to 3 more performers to close the show Reza Salleh, Najwa and Broken Scar. 2006-2007 has been a good year for the young and talented Reza Salleh as he kept busy with performing and promoting his EP Smoke City. Tonight this rising star melted the hearts of females as usual with his smooth chords. He previewed his new song and also a song off his EP.

Broken Scar came out not as a group but only the frontman Kevin Teh took centerstage tonight, most of his sets were influenced by Goo-Goo Dolls with a tinge of Creed. Kevin did a great job Rocking the crowd and the audience participated well. Rock On Dude!

Najwa was the sole reason I came. Tonight was the second time I watch her perform, she possesses the voice of a Neo Soul songstress, and it just demanded attention everytime she croons. The crowd asked for an encore and these three ended up playing more songs than their original setlists.

Like I said, it will be pretty difficult for the next installment to top this ones.

Have A Happy M.U.N.D.A.E. was one of the sure way to end a dreary monday blues.

Blacktronica Featuring Charlie Dark, Morgan Spacek, and The Works

Charlie Dark is the founder of the revolutionary Blacktronica collective and formerly of one third of the critically acclaimed ensemble Attica Blues. He was in the city in conjunction of the Spoken Word showcase happening on the next day.

Me and the crew from PW was hyped for this show from the get go, especially when I found out that the prominent Drum n Bass outfit The Works was going to be the opening act for the night. This event was made possible by the lads from British Council. The four of us arrived at the place around 10 pm and made our way to the new club Heritage Mansion after half an hour finding our way to the club.

As we make our way to the entrance, me and the guys were halted by the bouncer at the door, and the reason being we were not dressed according to the dresscode. I was pissed at first, cause I didn't drove all the way from Shah Alam just to be denied because of the way we dressed.

Something had to be done, I made a call to Shinji (Figure Of Speech) and explained the situation to him. We both talked to the hostess of the club, but she seemed to be strict about the club policy. So Shinji went back in to get Sunitha, the Representative from British Council, but to no avail because the hostess was adamant about the dresscode, but not until Charlie Dark (yes, the headliner himself!) came down and sort this crap out. Me and the guys were finally got in.

Personally and on behalf of the PW crew we would like thank you guys Shinji, Sunitha, and Charlie for getting us in.

Upon entrance Morgan Zarate aka Morgan Spacek spun a few old school RnB and Hip Hop classics with the likes of A Tribe Called Quest including other classics that did not received regular rotations on the decks or on the airwaves to warm up the crowd as DJ Cliq provided some of his signature scratches in between Morgan's mixes. Morgan's production resume ranges from Common, Mos Def, Amp Fiddler to name a few. Currently he’s completing his debut solo album which will be featuring a diverse set of artists including Dizzee Rascal, Ghostface Killer, Raphael Saadiq, and Eska.

About the time the crowd was hyped up, The Works took centerstage and opened the show with 3 outstanding emcees (Figure Of Speech, WordsManifest, and HQA) ripped the mic with their tight rhymes, the crowd was cheering and I can't get enough of the dope beats these maestros churning. DJ Mac provided DeeBee and Jungle beats in full assault with his phenomenal mixing skills (this is the guy who mixed Slayer's "Raining Blood" with Drum n Bass. Believe that!) Cody the conductor of the symphony was twiddling with the sounds and making sure we the audience get the experience of every beatsworth and DJ Cliq were exceptional with his scratches amidst the devastation caused. Me and the crew moshed for a while even Shinji went into the pit. Heritage Mansion wasn't ready for this massive sounds.

The works definitely tore The Mansion down.

After a 45 minutes set it was time for the headliner Charlie Dark himself to take command as he opened the mic to the crowd for an impromptu jams and spoken word performance letting anybody who would rhyme on a beat. The first to step up was Family Boy, second was Saph one half of NBE and these two were also from Rogue Squadron a Malaysian Underground Hip Hop collective, I was the third and the last one of the open mic emcees.
